What is a “Microcredential

A microcredential is a formal record certifying the learning outcomes an individual has achieved following a short-term learning experience. Unlike traditional broad degrees or lengthy diplomas, it focuses on targeted, specific skills and knowledge. According to the EU Council Recommendation of June 22, 2022, microcredentials serve as an agile tool for personal development, lifelong learning, and employability by validating shorter, flexible learning paths.

Within the Europe 4.0 Digital Citizens project, the microcredential acts as a verifiable proof of mastery for individuals who successfully complete the project’s eLearning course and its rigorous assessment procedures.

To guarantee total transparency, portable ownership, and labor market value, each issued microcredential contains specific, standardized components:

  • Modular & Stackable Structure: The project’s microcredential is divided into 13 independent units corresponding to the course curriculum. Learners can claim single units independently or “stack” them together into a comprehensive cluster.
  • Verified Digital Badges: Successful earners receive secure digital badges featuring embedded metadata. These are built in accordance with Open Badges 2.0 standards, making them fully tamper-proof, verifiable, and easily shareable through secure digital wallets like Europass.
  • High-Credibility Standards: Unlike many purely automated online certificates, this microcredential guarantees absolute trust for potential employers and institutions by requiring mandatory identity verification and strict, supervised onsite assessments.

Can I share my microcredentials directly to my LinkedIn profile or a digital CV?

Yes, you can.
Microcredentials are precisely designed for setting a standard format (often called Open Badges) that contains verified metadata.
For LinkedIn you can use the “Licenses & Certifications” Section, while for your digital CV you may add the verifiable link.

Are these microcredentials stored securely as Open Badges?

Yes, the microcredentials use a tamper-proofing and verification system. Our platform complies with the Open Badges 2.0 global standards, embedding all necessary metadata (such as the issuer, evaluation criteria, and evidence of your score) into a verifiable digital artifact that can be stored securely in digital wallets like Europass.

Enrollment and access

Can I access the course on my smartphone or tablet, or do I need a computer?

The eLearning Platform is easily accessible in any device. Built using the Articulate Suite (Rise 360), and available through the MOODLE Platform, the entire course features an inherently responsive and adaptive design, meaning it will display beautifully whether you are using a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

Participation and requirements

Do I need any prior knowledge or advanced digital skills?

Yes, a basic level of digital knowledge (such as navigating the internet and using a digital deviceis requiredbut the course does not require any advanced digital skillsIt is specifically built for low-to-medium skilled adults to bridge their gaps and confidently introduce them to complex technologies in a highly simplified, non-technical format.

What happens if I don’t pass an assessment on my first try? Can I retake it?

There are absolutely no negative consequences if you do not pass an assessment on your first attempt. The platform supports a flexible, self-paced learning journey designed to help you succeed. If you don’t pass, you can simply review the educational materials and you will have the opportunity to retake the assessment once, during the next scheduled assessment periodin order to qualify for your microcredential.

Are there accessibility features available (e.g., audio reading, high contrast, or large text)?

Yes, accessibility features are fully available. Our eLearning platform is built on Moodle LMS, which is completely WCAG 2.1 AA compliant, ensuring its tools are perceivable, operable, understandable, and compatible for all users.

Following the core principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), the course provides multiple means of representation to present information and content in different ways, accommodating learners with varying learning preferences, sensory disabilities, or learning difficulties.

To support this UDL approach, the platform incorporates the following features to customize text and media:

  • Text and Visual Customization: Through built-in tools like the Atto Editor and its Screen Reader Helper, the platform ensures long blocks of text are broken down by headings, tables include proper headers, and font colors maintain an accessible contrast against the background. It also automatically identifies images with missing alternative (alt) text to assist screen readers.
  • Audio and Visual Alternatives: To ensure content does not depend on a single sense, we provide text equivalents such as captions, automated speech-to-text, and written transcripts for audio or video clips.
  • Playback Control: Learners can customize their viewing experience by directly controlling both the volume and the playback speed of all audio and video files within the platform.

Can I choose individual modules, or do I have to complete the full course?

You have complete freedom to choose. The curriculum features a modular structure consisting of 13 independent thematic units across two main modules. Because there is no strict hierarchy, you can study and claim a microcredential for a single bite-sized unit independently, or you can complete all 13 units to stack them together into the full, comprehensive Europe 4.0 Digital Citizens qualification.

What personal data is collected during registration and assessment?

We collect minimal identification data (such as your full name, email address, and country) required exclusively to generate the metadata for your digital badge. Additionally, because these microcredentials maintain the highest standards of industry trust, you will be required to present a valid identity document to your national partner team for verification during the supervised testing phase. All data collection tightly complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Costs and certification

Is the eLearning course free of charge?

Yes, the Europe 4.0 Digital Citizens eLearning course is completely free of charge for all participants. The project is entirely co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

Will I still have access to the platform and my microcredentials after the course officially ends?

Yes, you will. All project outputs, materials, and the eLearning platform will remain hosted, functional, and fully open to the public for a minimum of five (5) years after the official funding period ends (at least until the year 2031).
